Volumen 2 · Capítulo 15

Subjunctive Without Panic

Start with quiero que, necesito que, es importante que, ojalá.

The subjunctive is a mood, not a tense. It appears after wishes, needs, doubts, emotions, and requirements.

You do not need the whole system now. You need a few patterns you can recognize and reuse.

quiero que

Use it when one person wants another person to do something.

I want to go. Same person, infinitive.
I want you to come. Different person, subjunctive.
I want you to help me.

necesito que

I need you to sign here.
I need you to send me the receipt.
I need you to check my name.

es importante que

This is common in instructions.

It is important that you arrive early.
It is important that you bring copies.
It is important that you do not lose this paper.

ojalá

means “hopefully” or “I hope.” It often triggers subjunctive.

Hopefully it goes well.
Hopefully it does not take long.

Recognition first

When you hear these endings, do not analyze every detail. Recognize the meaning:

come, subjunctive
bring, subjunctive
sign, subjunctive or command
check, subjunctive or command

Drill: use the starter patterns

That is enough subjunctive to recognize many real instructions.
