Volumen 2 · Capítulo 15
Subjunctive Without Panic
Start with quiero que, necesito que, es importante que, ojalá.
The subjunctive is a mood, not a tense. It appears after wishes, needs, doubts, emotions, and requirements.
You do not need the whole system now. You need a few patterns you can recognize and reuse.
quiero que
Use it when one person wants another person to do something.
- I want to go. Same person, infinitive.
- I want you to come. Different person, subjunctive.
- I want you to help me.
necesito que
- I need you to sign here.
- I need you to send me the receipt.
- I need you to check my name.
es importante que
This is common in instructions.
- It is important that you arrive early.
- It is important that you bring copies.
- It is important that you do not lose this paper.
ojalá
means “hopefully” or “I hope.” It often triggers subjunctive.
- Hopefully it goes well.
- Hopefully it does not take long.
Recognition first
When you hear these endings, do not analyze every detail. Recognize the meaning:
- come, subjunctive
- bring, subjunctive
- sign, subjunctive or command
- check, subjunctive or command
Drill: use the starter patterns
That is enough subjunctive to recognize many real instructions.
